Full Tilt Poker broke the record for the world’s largest online tournament on Sunday and then proceeded to lose it again to PokerStars, who broke the record again a short time later.
Full Tilt pokers bid to stage the biggest online poker tournament ever was part of their 5th anniversary celebrations and they succeeded (for a short time) by securing 50,000 entrants for their $5 buy-in $500 000 guaranteed event, breaking the previous world record of 35,000 players held by PokerStars.
Unfortunately for Full Tilt Poker, PokerStars were aware of their record breaking attempt and launched a counter challenge to retain their place in the Guinness Book of World Records.
PokerStars offered a similar tournament for a fraction of the cost and were able to draw on their bigger player pool to ensure success. The PokerStars $1 buy-in, $130 000 guaranteed surprise tournament drew the capacity 65,000 players ensuring the world record stays at PokerStars(for now).
